Mission Accomplished!
By Ensign Victoria Love.
The Crusader returns to Starbase 140 humbled, and questions abound. Nonetheless, it returns after it's first Story line ever and although it wasn't exactly one of those mind numbing slugfest with phaser fire, and destruction abound. No, this was a simple affair for a small ship, with a small crew. A simple escort mission that would give the GF purpose.
It was the first Story line that Candela (or in this case Candice) would actually see done from beginning to end. This puppy was all hers, and the as well the crew of the Crusader. A crew of 7 talented characters that somehow were drawn to this small Saber Class starship. Strange thing, by the end their crew numbered 9, and there weren't any detractors to the mission. In short summary, the Cestus sector is abound with pirates. Strange part is that they appear to be after Romulan freighters. To make matters worse, the suspected craft used is a Klingon Bird of Prey. In fear of a collapse of the newly formed alliance agreement with the Federation, the Crusader is on a hunt of sorts to find these illusive pirates.
It's first encounter was not very promising, falling into a trap that would allow the pirates to attack one of the freighters, but the intelligence that was gathered after the attack was extensive, as well as puzzling. They would find 12 survivors on the freighter, all injured but none very seriously though they lost alot of blood. With a sizeable amount of Trillium, and Dilithium taken from the freighter, it was apparent that this was not a Bird Of Prey, and even more likely that these were not Klingons at all. A brief visit from a Klingon Cruiser confirms of other sightings such as a rouge Federation Runabout that attacked a Klingon Convoy. Ensign Von Merr has an interesting explanation, incursion technology. The same technology used in the 22nd Century by the Romulans, but the question is who is using it.
All in all, one great story line, and one great Captain who thought of it. It also sets up the GF era story line which Starbase 140 will be center of all activity. Unfortunately, tonight's SIM will be the last SIM this year for the Crusader. With Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve interrupting the next few weeks, there are plans to continue the adventure on the boards. Also, I am assured that those who want to SIM, that something might be set up for those nights. But tonight promises to be most rewarding, after all we are all pioneers. We are the first GF live simmers and we should be proud, lets make the last one, one of the best one's this year.
The USS Crusader
By Fleet Admiral Vanessa Ann Lucifel
It's not the biggest, baddest, or most powerful ship in the fleet, but it does it's Job well. I chosen it for the first SIM for a few reasons. One, I'm a old Trekker, back to the days of the venerable Constitution Class. Sure they were powerful for their day, but they had reasonable limitations. Besides, Starfleet is not about blowing everything to smithereens.
Two, I wanted a ship that had a reason to go on shore leave, visit colonies, and do escorts. It had to have some speed, and be ultra maneuverable. Sure a Defiant class fits those criteria's, but it's a tad too small for my purposes.
Finally a ship that can get into the fray. You wouldn't call it to handle an invasion at the neutral zone, but it can come in for support. Lets face it, it's the Bird of Prey for the Federation. Gather info, and fight when you have to.
The Crusader has been modified from it's sister ships over the years. For purposes of the GF, these specifications reflect these changes.

The Saber Class History
Notes : The Saber class was part of Starfleet's modernization program of the 2340's. They were designed to be a frigate counterpart to the Steamrunner class starship; much smaller, easier to build and hence considerably more numerous. The designers brought in many measures to ensure that the Saber class would be easy to build; like the much earlier Oberth class science vessels the Saber's design is highly modular in nature, allowing ten thousand ton sections to be constructed in small shipyards before final assembly in a larger facility. One requirement was for the Saber's to have a science and exploration capacity equal to 85% that of a Steamrunner class along with equal cruise and maximum speeds - a measure intended to allow the vessels to work together in coordinated operations. This proved an exceptionally difficult target to meet in a hull with only two thirds of the volume of a Steamrunner; the designers were eventually forced to cut the torpedo armament of the Saber class from the original two triple-fire torpedo tubes to a single mono-fire tube and reduce the load carried from 90 to 30 torpedoes. The six type VII phaser arrays were at first to be reduced to only four, but in the event a reduction in the ships accommodation levels allowed a single Type VIII emitter to be worked into the leading edge of the saucer section. This brought the overall phaser power to some 91% of the initial planned phaser capacity. The competition for internal volume also forced a reduction in the size of the warp core, and as a result the Saber can only manage a top speed of Warp 9.2 compared to the Steamrunner's Warp 9.5.
The original specifications of the Saber called for a crew of 130, but increased automation of the engineering systems allowed this to be cut to 118 and then 102. Conditions for the crew are quite poor by the standards of the Steamrunner or Akira classes; crew quarters average 30 square meters and there are no Holodecks. In addition, there are no personal replicator stations in crew quarters - instead three mess areas are provided with replicator systems for the whole crew. The Saber's have proved reasonably successful in service, although the relatively poor living conditions has led to a shorter than expected average mission duration. Like the larger Akira and Steamrunner classes, Saber's have largely served in the frontier regions and they have been an uncommon sight at the heart of the Federation. This has changed over the last three years, when many of the Saber class have been relocated near the core as part of Starfleet's build-up of forces against the Dominion. Sabers featured heavily during the recent Borg incursion, where many of the ships involved in the Typhon and Earth battles were destroyed or severely damaged.

The Crusaders History
The USS Crusader was commissioned on September 17, 2363. Captain Fred Braun Commanded her from 2363 to 2369, where she spent most of her time patrolling the Cardassian border. In 2364, a brief encounter with a Cardassian Cruiser in federation space was the only armed engagement she had faced in that area. She also did numerous escorts between Betazed, and Trill. In 2367 she was to rendezvous with the USS Endeavor, and participate in the battle of Wolf 359, but due to an overload in it's phaser arrays she never made it. In 2369 Captain Braun was reassigned to the USS Davenport, and Commander Jay Thomas assumed command. In 2370 she was stationed at Starbase 310 where she would patrol the Cardassian border. Soon after the increased activity of the Marquis would send the Crusader to patrolling all colonies for Marquis Activity. In 2372, the Crusader successfully captured 3 Marquis Raiders that had biogenic weapons that were to be used against the Cardassians.
With the Start of the Klingon - Federation War, the Crusader would see lots of action. In early 2373, the Crusader was attacked by 4 Bird of Prey, Command Thomas would perish in the battle, as well as 15 other crewmembers. The Crusader was salvaged, and sent back to Utopia Planatia for refit. Later that year, the Crusader would see more action under Command of Lt Cdr Karen Landry as they participated in the Defense of Earth from a Borg invasion. The Crusader was once again place in refit until 2374.
Landry was promoted to Captain, and the Crusader was assigned to Star base 375 as the Dominion war is heating up. It took part in the Betazed Invasion, and rescued 116 civilians from the planet. Later, they were also instrumental in the first battle of Chin'toka. The Crusader would continue patrolling the Kalandra Sector, then in 2375, the Breen joined the Cardassian and Dominion and retook Chin'toka. The second battle was not as successful, and many ships were lost, the Crusader was lucky to escape, but she lost 33 crewmembers, as well as Captain Landry. The Crusader was repaired at Starbase 375, and given to Captain Dianne Thatch. She would participate in the final battle at Cardassia, and from there remain attached to Starbase 375.
In 2379 the USS Crusader was damaged by a Temporal Anomaly, and was sent to Utopia Planatia for refit. In 2380 she returned to service escorting between Earth, and the Romulan Empire. In 2382 the Crusader participated in a cooperative raid on Eta Corvi where they found a Cache of Dominion weapons stocked piled by the Orion Syndicate. 2384 The Crusader was reassigned to Starbase 24 where she would patrol several sectors, as well as Khitomer. 2386 Captain Thatch is reassigned, and the Crusader is sent to Dry-dock at Utopia Planatia. Later that year, the 14th Fleet is given the USS Crusader, and assigned it to the Cestus System at Starbase 140. LtCdr Candela Greene is given command.

Game Review
by: Crio Ijoula
"Space, the final frontier.
Starfleet's mission: to explore strange, new worlds.
To seek out new life and new civilations.
To boldly go...where no man has gone before."
The above words, uttered by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) introduce you to the game known as Star Trek: Tactical Assault. This gamer only has the version for the Nintendo dual-screen handheld (Nintendo DS), so I'm not sure if it is introduced the same way in the PlayStation Portable (PSP) edition.
In the intro, you see some fairly nice shots of the Constitution-class (Refit version) USS Enterprise, soaring around the galaxy.
At the main menu, you have 4 major play mode options: New Campaign, Load Campaign, Skirmish, Multi-player.
The game consists of two separate campaigns: Federation and Klingon. When you initially start the game, only the Federation campaign is accessible. You begin with a frigate ship, which is the least well armed of the Federation ships. Over the course of completing missions, you can earn "Crew Upgrade Points" to increase capabilities on your ship. You can use these points to upgrade different skills of your officers. Note: The skills that are upgraded will stay with you as you progress through that campaign set.
As of this writing, I have completed the Federation campaign of 15 missions, ranging from objectives like search & rescue, defending outposts, starship combat, and diplomatic escort, just to mane a few. For those curious, many of these missions were very difficult for me to complete, and I kept getting blown up. One plus that is available for all but one of the Federation missions, is the ability to recharge your shields by using emergency power, which very slowly recharges after usage.
I am now partially into the Klingon campaign, and it is even more difficult than the Federation one, and you cannot recharge your shields.
As you progress through, you will unlock new ships for multi-player and skirmish modes.
At this point, I feel I should add some of my own thoughts here. When I first picked up the game and tried it out, I thought, "Wow, Starfleet Command in the palm of my hand," and that's kind of what it is, but with noticeable differences.
Oh, and I forgot one other thing. The way the story progresses is dependant entirely on the choices you make during the game, mostly during the communication answers you give.
Are you ready for the burdens and rewards of command? If so, then pick up Star Trek: Tactical Assault at your nearest video game retail store, and continue Starfleet's mission "to boldly go where no man...where no one has gone before."
