He ponders what's being said about the impulse engines, and he feels an idea come on from Brexen's memories for rather unorthodox engineering practices in a crunch.
"I'm not crazy about a 40% chance of being left stranded... Can the power relays be modified to handle that new cooling system, or even swapped out? I do know that if we go in as we are and try to go faster than one-third impulse, we'd likely be burning deuterium, and we know how that would likely end..."
His gaze shifts toward Hanes.
"Mister Hanes, you told me you've piloted ships around the Patch. Have you been able to fly a ship in there at anything approaching full impulse speeds? If so, I would like those engine specs."
His gaze went back to Sakura, as more engineering thoughts were coming up from Brexen's experiences, trying to come up with something to aid their current dilemma. He would then glance at Commander Elbrun for input, as he mulled over the information so far.

Derrick ponders the Captains query.
When I Posted on the Damascus I did take a Type 4 shuttle to 3 quarter impulse for quite a distance.
He pause a moment as the Captain seemed happy to hear that.
It took the Damascus 6 days to find me. Burnt the impulse drive like hair to a flame in less then 20 kilometers into the Briar Patch.

He eyes Hanes for a little bit from his response.
"I was hoping that we could go faster in the Patch without blowing out the impulse engines."
He glances at Sakura again.
"Is it possible to set up an additional filtration system to the main impulse manifolds that would help filter out the particulate and gaseous material that normally bogs down ships maneuvering in there?"
He is also pondering the use of the Breen engine coolers, fully aware of the risks involved as said by his engineer. He is planning a backup idea to that, which would enable a rescue if necessary.

Crio ponders the arguments so far, and then looks at everyone.
"Let's proceed with the engine coolers. Before we go into the Patch, we'll send a burst message to Starbase 140 informing them of our situation, and advise that if they don't hear from us within two days, to come searching for us.
Maybe we can also use warp power to strengthen the shields, weapons, and maybe boost the holographic emitters to increase their range."

I'm on it Captain, but I can use some help, if it's OK can I burrow Lt Mendez?

He nods at Sakura and then looks toward Mendez. "Sure. Keep me advised. Dismissed."

"Captain's log, supplemental:
It's been three hours since I briefed my senior officers on our mission plans. Lieutenants Moragami and Mendez have succeeded at bringing the new Breen impulse engine cooling manifolds online, and we're ready to meet up with the task force just outside of Sector Four-Four-One. We still haven't received any word from Captain Grayson since the initial intelligence burst, so I'm eager to find out what new information they have on the situation...
Computer, end log entry..."

Having made out his log, he sits back on the couch in his ready room, pondering his orders again, which stated that he was to take command of a task force of eight to twelve starships, depending on how many Starbase 238 could spare for this mission. He wasn't entirely sure why he was selected for this mission, outside of the fact that Columbia successfully led the charge to defend Starbase 140 at their launch, against overwhelming forces. Columbia has also led a few other smaller task forces in the year since, all with successful outcomes with minimal or no losses.
He then glanced out the window as the stars streaked by, gathering his thoughts.

He gathered his thoughts some more and finished off his cup of tea, and then strode back onto the bridge and walked slowly around the back of the bridge.
He hated flying under a communications blackout. That invited bigger problems, up to and including being ambushed by time they reached their destination. As such, he was quite antsy, and fighting to prevent that from being seen.
He then rounded the bridge, bringing him toward the forward viewscreen and the Ops and Helm stations. He then approached Hanes.
"Derrick, what's our ETA with the task force?" he asked, trying to become more personable to his senior officers by using their first names more, where appropriate.
