Sakura had just entered the Bridge from the Turbo Lift with PADD in tow. She was a bit apprehensive taking the Columbia into the Briar Patch. It was LtJG Mendez belief that Sakura had somehow bonded with the ship which isn't unusual, but is kind of weird.
None the less she checks the Engineering station first before turning for the Briefing Room for the senior Staff meeting.

(This is a Dual Post with Ensign Mendez and LtJG Morugami)
Rosaria was chipper this morning as she finish a scan of the perimeter. Spotting Sakura she secured her work station, and pursued her towards the Briefing room with a broad smile.
I can still see your worried.
Sakura sighed as she turned to Rosaria. I swear I liked it better when you were just a Science Officer and not the shis Counselor.
Blame that on Derrick. None the less I'm sure the Columbia will be fine.
Easy for you to say. All we need is one Pocket of metreon Gas and Poof. None the less I made some safe guards, I was checking the LCARS for ways of reducing energy output and came across a cold fusion impulse engine.
Rosario raises an eyebrow in concern. Sounds familar.
It should, the Breen has been using them for the past 100 years. If it's OK with the captain I want to adapt our Impulse engines.
So I take it you given up on the EFH (Emergency Fleet Hologram) project?[/b]
Sakura looks to Rose a bit upset with sarcasm. I told you thats Top Secret. I want all the problems solved before I mention that to the Captain.
They both enter the Briefing room.

Uncharacteristic of him, he arrived with the last group of officers in the Observation Lounge. He then looks around the room toward all his officers, and then heads toward the head of the table and sits down.
"As some of you may already be aware, the Tholians have been pushing hard into Federation space, occupying various systems, apparently at random. One of the areas that they've pushed into is the Briar Patch... Fleet Admiral Yates has assigned Columbia to take command of a task force of eight starships with the objective being to drive them out of the Patch. This is going to be a challenge due to the environmental hazards of the Patch, and the fact that we don't know just how many Tholian ships we'll find in there."
He looks around the room into the faces of each of his senior officers.
"I'm interested in your thoughts on this mission."

Sakura seemed to be put on the spot, as Rosaria nudged her. She seemed embarrassed a bit as she spoke.
Captain, I may have something that might able us to ward off any entanglements in the Briar Patch.

He looked toward his engineer as she spoke up and nodded, open to any input that his crew had.

I was concentration on major engagements that a starship was outnumbered or out gunned. I went through the LCARS some 200 years and one particular engagement got my attention. In 2371 the USS Voyager made a Holographic fleet that confused their opponent and brought them some time. he Columbia is much more advance, and has several hard points that can accommodate holo emitters. I also could convert several probes as holo-reflectors. These probes would have torpedo launchers, as well as phasers thus making this Holo fleet a true defensive maneuver as well as offensive one. I call it the Emergency Hologram Fleet.

He listens carefully as Sakura explains her idea, and a smile starts to spread across his face after she finished explaining the holographic fleet.
"I love it. If I didn't know better, I'd say you knew how to throw one heck of a costume party." he said, and chuckled at it, letting his jovial side show to help break the ice of official business.
"How long would it take to complete this project, and is there a way we can fool enemy sensors into seeing actual ships versus holographic projections or holographically disguised probes, perhaps by using thoron field distortions, duranium shadows, and/or false sensor telemetry?"

Rosaria excited as she heres the Captain acceptance of the idea, hearing his query she couldn't help bu join in.
I believe we can configure at least 8 probes in 6 hours. As for fooling the sensors, I've been working on that problem with Lt Moragami. I believe a transponder in each probe will do the trick sir. As far as the enemy all they will see, and believe there is a fleet of starships. The only limitation is the probes must remain with 10 kilometers of the Columbia

He nods as he takes in the details, making a few mental notes.
"Ten kilometers is very close quarters, especially if we engage in any fancy maneuvers at high impulse. How well shielded will the probes be? I'd imagine that if the Tholians get a lucky shot on them despite the sensor decoy transponders, we'd be down one 'escort' per lucky shot. Though I will take any edge we can get, to come out of this mission in one piece.
Another thing that concerns me is all the metreon gas pockets in there. Even a glancing hit by weapons fire will cause a large explosion due to how unstable metreon is. Captain Riker had used that as a weapon during the Enterprise's mission here seventeen years ago, in what has since been dubbed the 'Riker Maneuver.' If push comes to shove, we may have to employ that tactic. Any ideas on how we can avoid accidentally detonating the gas while collecting and releasing it, or if we have to play a game of 'hide and seek' going in and out of the pockets? I'd imagine if weapons fire can easily set it off, then our impulse engines might risk it too, if we have to go at full impulse."

I may have an answer Captain. As you know Phasers, as well as Photon torpedoes are not an option in the Briar patch, yet if the Tholians are entrenched in the Briar Patch they could theoretically live with the consequences. I say we play by their rules as if we can fool them into believing we are a normal starfleet we can beat them at their own game. Luring them out of the Metreon clouds would be the first step, the other is to utilize all of our Impulse Propulsion.

He listens carefully to Thorne's input.
"Makes sense. If we have to fight the Tholians in there, we know they wouldn't dare have a battleship present. But I'd imagine it would be like the human expression that speaks of 'stirring a hornets' nest', much like how we were at Starbase 140 before their cruisers showed up.
I'm open to ideas on how to lure them out of the metreon pockets. And if we have to go in close to any of them, how much can we strengthen the shields?"

But that's impossible, our Impulse drive manifolds will burn out. We can't exceed One third impulse, and if we do we will frie to a cinder.

The spoils of war, after the Dominion War Admiral Reginald Barclay got a hold of a Breen Impulse Manifold from a derilict ship. He found out the Breen use a cooling system to keep their manifolds at a constant 20 degrees Fahrenheit. I believe we can use this technology on our own impulse engines, if it works we should have full Impulse available.
As far as luring them, we aren't sure what to expect is waiting for us in there but none the less I'm sure we can use the Holographic fleet as a diversion.

He listens carefully to the suggestions and potential arguments.
"I know a speed limitation has been observed in the past within the Patch due to the difficulty of the engine intake manifolds to process the particulate matter and various gasses in there..
How long would it take to outfit our impulse engines with this cooling system, and adapt the impulse manifolds to better handle the Patch?"
He glances again at Hanes.
"Are we still on track to meet up with the task force at least two hours ahead of the deadline imposed by Admiral Foxx? I want to confer with Captain Grayson and the other ship captains before we go into the Patch."

Feeling a bit awkward she shyly back off a bit and then paused.
Actually sir...I was thinking ahead as it is kind of untested, we already placed the manifold...in stand by just in case. I wanted to run a few more test as I've been having inconsistencies with the power regulators. 60% of the test show no abnormalities, but that 40% has me a bit concerned about placing it in service. If a overload should occur we'd be stuck in the Briar Patch for months trying to rebuild the impulse drive in that environment.
