"Captain's personal log, supplemental:
Columbia is within arm's reach of Starbase 140. Our estimated ETA is about an hour. Our return will be joyous in the sense that we have completed our first mission successfully, with the rescue of a very good friend Admiral Vanessa Lucifel as well as her ship and crew.
I find myself greatly concerned about the new weapons being employed by the Tholians. This... "protoculture" substance has proven itself to be extremely powerful. I cannot help but wonder how many others have control of this substance, other than the Tholians. I'm worried about what we may find out as our investigation continues. I can't shake the feeling, though, that there's a 'puppet-master' working behind the scenes, pulling the strings of what we see taking place. Ultimately, we will need to find whoever this is, and put a stop to their activities.
Ensign Mendez has informed me that she has put together a scientific briefing on this new weapon, which I am very interested in. To make sure everyone is up to speed, I have invited Admirals Lucifel and Gunn, as well as Captains Gomez and Suder to join myself and Columbia's senior staff for this briefing, once we dock at the starbase. Hopefully, we can come up with ideas to deal with this new threat...

"Captain's personal log, stardate 67053.6:
Columbia's return to Starbase 140 has its positive and negative sides to it. I am wondering, though, about what we may find in the coming days about this new weapon being employed by the Tholians, and what unseen force has incited them to attack us for no apparent reason. I am relieved that we were able to find and rescue our comrades aboard the USS Federation. I truly don't want to see more lives lost or more of our ships destroyed, but it may unfortunately be inevitable... We will fight to save lives.
To say that Columbia's crew has pulled together well in a crisis is an understatement. Just a little over two weeks ago, we were a bunch of officers and enlisted personnel onboard a brand new Sovereign-class starship, and now, having seen what can be accomplished together, I have a profound sense of pride in each and every man and woman that I am privileged to serve with here.
I am glad to have been able to spend some time with two very dear friends, whose friendships have carried over from a previous lifetime surprisingly well. Admiral Vanessa Lucifel, who Brexen had worked closely with in engineering and anti-Borg weapons development - now the newly appointed commander of our fleet group. She used to tell Brexen that she was glad she had someone who would pull her out of bad situations, and I used to wonder if I wasn't there, who would provide that aid... I would like to think that she is greatly relieved to have her 'fiery-haired buddy' back in some way. She used to always want Brexen to call her by her initials, which are V.J. I'm not sure how to explain to her that in the Trill native language, to say the initials also sounds alot like a term of endearment, very similar to the Betazoid word 'imzadi'. I know this frustrated the admiral many times, but maybe if she knew the full reason, it might make sense.
As for Kestra Suder, now at the rank of captain... I'm not sure that words can begin to describe the shared feelings toward her... I was greatly relieved when we were able to rescue her and at least some of her crew from the USS Challenger. I'll admit, I was hoping to see what kind of fight she and her crew had in them during the attack, but fate does sometimes play cruel tricks... I have greatly enjoyed her company during our maiden voyage, and find that I'll miss it when she leaves for her new command, assuming she accepts it.
While Columbia undergoes what I'm going to call a 'wartime retrofit', I intend to see what help my crew can be to the starbase personnel with their damage control efforts, if shore leave plans have not been finalized. I won't make it an order, but I'll put it before the engineering crews as an option if they want to keep busy...

"Captain's personal log, supplemental:
The destruction wrought in the Cestus system has given my crew and I a solid reason to fight. From what I've seen, more than three-quarters of Columbia's crew has expressed a strong desire to get back into the fight. I can't say that I blame them, after what we witnessed together...
I am headed back over to the starbase to consult with Fleet Admiral Yates in order to see where we're needed. Rumors have abounded among the engineering department that we may be headed to the Briar Patch given some of the equipment that Chief Moragami has received with the rest of our refit. I'll find out soon enough...

"Captain's personal log, stardate 67855.1:
Columbia has received new orders to rendevous with a small task force just outside of the Briar Patch, in Sector Four-Four-One. Right now, I don't know much else about our mission, except that I'm to take command of this task force. I guess we'll see what happens from there.
I am very pleased with how my crew has come together, and that I've been able to really get to know senior officers and a number of the junior officers. My experiences as a first officer have proven that the bonds developed between a captain and his or her crew have a direct impact on how they handle their responsibilities, so I hope I've been able to foster a very positive relationship, maybe even a friendship, with those under my command.
On a side note, I made sure we were fully armed before we shipped out from Starbase 140. If we're going into a combat situation, I don't want to run out of weapons mid-fight again..."
